Photo of The Maples, a large mansion in arts annex

Did you know that there used to be a huge house in the woods near the Arts Annex? The house belonged to Richard Fitzgerald, Durham’s leading brickmaker around 1890, when he and his family moved into the ornate house, called ‘The Maples.’ The Fitzgerald family was a prominent African-American family in Durham, and their wealth was responsible for much of the development of the West End around the turn of the last century (thanks, Open Durham, for the info!). Sadly, The Maples was destroyed by fire sometime before 1924.
